Comment Rules
Discussing retro gaming and retro anime is a vital part of the retro gaming and anime community. Please remember to think of the comments as a conversation between individuals and interact with civility. Since Shinkansen Retrogamer is run by one person (Cory Roberts, aka yours truly, “The Hobby Writer”), these rules may evolve as needed. Please note that doing any of the things listed here will result in your comments being removed, and serious violations will result in a permanent ban and be reported to the Substack officials.
Personal attacks: Don’t attack or insult others. This includes name-calling other commenters as the hobby writer is not a GOP supporter (in Canada and the UK, the Tories or in Brazil, Partido Liberal “Liberal Party”), a Trump (“MAGA”) supporter, a lazy person, an unemployed individual, or an internet troll. He is definitely not any of these!
Racism, sexism, and other discrimination: Attacking entire classes of people is an absolute no-no. This includes those who have autism, bipolar disorder, or ADHD. The hobby writer also does not promote misinformation, homophobia, feminism, masculinism, white supremacy, or anti-Semitism.
Commenting in languages other than English: This is allowed. The hobby writer prefers English, but other languages (such as Latin/European Spanish, Brazilian/European Portuguese, Canadian/European French, Japanese, German, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Italian) are also allowed; they need to be translated into English.
Doxxing: Not allowed. Don’t reveal someone’s private information.
Spamming: Spamming comments is not allowed. This includes self-promotion. Generally speaking, promoting your projects here will be marked as spam.
Swearing in comments: Swearing is allowed, but don’t use the seven dirty words or go all Gordon Ramsay. In the 1990s/early 2000s, anime series that were previously broadcast, including the video games that were exported from Japan, had to face censorship to either appease younger audiences or avoid a moral backlash in Western countries. This newsletter does not review any video games made by id Software.
Alt-tech websites: Shinkansen Retrogamer does not use alt-tech websites of any kind, including Telegram. Wikipedia describes it as a collection of social networking services and Internet service providers popular among the alt-right, far-right, and others who espouse extremism or fringe theories, typically because they employ looser content moderation than mainstream platforms. If you have Telegram, delete it or abandon it immediately since Telegram is an alt-tech website.
Xbox games: This newsletter does not review any Xbox games unless necessary, as the hobby writer had an Xbox, which was heavily North American (and European) oriented until around late 2007.
Covering censorship: Shinkansen Retrogamer has covered censorship (violence, blood, LGBT characters, nudity, and dub name change) during the anime series’ original broadcast, including video games censored in the Western market. Most anime series don’t face a dub name change these days since most of them are on Netflix, Hulu, and/or Crunchyroll. Most video game companies still regularly had to change the game titles’ or characters’ names to fit the Western audience.
Failure to follow this newsletter’s discussion guidelines will result in being banned from this newsletter and later reported to Substack officials. Please remember that owning or maintaining a newsletter on Substack (including the account), when created, is a privilege, not a right.
If you have any questions, please email the hobby writer on the About page.
