About Shinkansen Retrogamer

Shinkansen Retrogamer is a blog that reviews video games and anime from the past so that people can revisit their childhoods, including the things they missed as children and teenagers. It also covers video games and anime not released outside Japan, including the anime series that left the North American airwaves. Think Fox Kids (later Fox Box, then 4Kids TV), Jetix, and Kids’ WB! (in the case of Canada, Teletoon (now Cartoon Network Canada), YTV, and TVOkids, or in the case of the UK, CBBC or in the case of Australia, ABC Kids — not to be confused with the American ABC).

Shinkansen Retrogamer (formerly Shinkansen Retrogaming) was inaugurated on Medium in late 2018, after The Cube, a publication on Medium, was shuttered. In mid-2021, the retrogaming blog started reviewing anime from the past, including anime series that were not aired on American airwaves. We want people to revisit their childhood and have the new generation watch the shows.

Shinkansen Retrogamer is updated biweekly.

Read reviews of video games and anime from the past

I have been reviewing retro gaming and anime as a hobby since late 2018, as the newsletter is about people revisiting their childhood, including the anime series and video games that were rejected outside of Japan.

About the hobby writer

Cory Roberts, better known by his pen name Samurai Cory, is an American illustrator and manga artist born in 1990. He draws Y2K clothing and big sneakers and spends most of his time creating artwork and manga.

He never had any formal education in art, but was entirely self-taught, and his passion for drawing was evident from watching anime from the mid-to-late 1990s to the Y2K as a child to reading how-to-draw manga books since he was a teenager. He is also producing the upcoming webcomic series, Shibuya Brawlers.

In his spare time, he runs this retro gaming and anime newsletter on Substack. You can see him in his ultra-baggy tank top, ultra-baggy JNCO jeans (or alternatively ultra-baggy jorts), and oversized sneakers.
