Shinkansen Retrogamer’s closure date
Don’t panic! Shinkansen Retrogamer will continue to talk about video games and anime from the past until June 11, 2026.
After that, Shinkansen Retrogamer will remain but will no longer be updated or edited. Video games or anime with adult ratings containing graphic images or content (such as any games made by id Software) will not be reviewed due to graphic images/violence in compliance with the Substack Guidelines.
Where to find other retro gaming/retro anime newsletters/blogs
I recommend that you either subscribe to another retro gaming/retro anime-related newsletter on Substack or find another retro gaming/retro anime blog, well before June 11, 2026. I can recommend the following retro gaming blogs (list in progress). This list shows you where you can subscribe to another Substack (must be free without any paywalls) or find another retro gaming/retro anime blog.
SegaBits (not a retro gaming blog)
Many Substack and Medium publications have paywalls, and the blogging platforms use Stripe for payments instead of PayPal, which is not ideal for those who are still in high school, college, or university, and many content creators use PayPal for both Patreon and Ko-fi instead of Stripe.
For the original photographers who have their pictures featured on this newsletter on Substack
This newsletter will continue to use pictures from Unsplash, Pixabay, Wikimedia Commons, Flickr, and Pexels (either CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, or the Unsplash/Pexels/Pixabay license) as described in the “About” page. No permission will be asked if the pictures are under the terms of either Creative Commons or the Unsplash, Pexels, or Pixabay license, including the public domain, as the pictures are automatically attributed to the original photographers in the captions. An email will be sent to the original photographers when it’s necessary.
For Wikimedia Commons administrators (including the Wikimedia Foundation staff): If the pictures are removed from Wikimedia Commons, please email me (which can be found in the newsletter’s “About” page), and I will remove the pictures from this newsletter accordingly. If you are concerned about your personality rights and have a right to maintain privacy, please email me and I will blur/pixelate your faces in the pictures accordingly.
Unsubscribing from this newsletter
You can unsubscribe from the Shinkansen Retrogamer newsletter at any time by clicking “Unsubscribe” at the bottom of any email you’ve received.
Shinkansen Retrogamer has no plans for a Discord server or a subreddit on Reddit and only has a Spoutible account and a Facebook page.
What happened?!?
The landscape has changed since I will have to focus on life, such as learning how to drive and learning Japanese on Duolingo more seriously, including taking artwork and webcomics more seriously (including creating content on the internet), growing a following on social media, and upgrading from an Intel-based iMac to the Mac Mini following Apple’s discontinuation of Intel-based iMacs (you can read the prior post here). Instead of suffering another four years of Trump and his MAGA cronies, I refused to live with it. Instead, I ultimately decided to leave America permanently for Japan. The only way to stop seeing the support coordinator is to leave the US state (or province in the case of Canada) or leave the country permanently.
Americans will have to reconsider moving to Canada since the Canadian federal government has banned foreign buyers and foreign renters until the end of 2026 and is taking bold action and working with all orders of the Canadian government to build more homes and apartments faster and put homeownership and renting back within reach for more Canadians. They will also have to reconsider moving to Germany because of the country’s strict youth protection laws, as Steam has removed a massive catalog of games without the USK rating.
I am heartbroken to discontinue Shinkansen Retrogamer after its seven-year run. This hobby blog was made to attract people who revisit their childhood. I want to express my most sincere thanks to everyone who has read, supported, and followed this retro gaming and retro anime blog for more than seven years. I hope you’ve enjoyed the journey as much as I did.
